Italian parsley, chives and lemon grass, herbs often used at Cascata Grill for their Mediterranean-Caribbean style dishes. I was also fascinated by the abundance of tropical fruits - carambola or “starfruit,” Barbados cherry, oranges, pomegranate, sapodilla, sugar cane, limes, papaya, mango, guava, tamarind, and caimito, a purple-skinned fruit with a star pattern in the pulp. Best of all, I spotted some callaloo or Jamaican spinach with its leafy branches and bright red upper branches, a vegetable common to the Caribbean and delicious as a side dish with fresh fish. From the garden it was an easy walk across the main driveway to the Turnberry Isle Spa & Fitness Center, a three-floor, 25,000 sq. ft. spa with spiral staircase and domed glass ceiling with 21 treatment rooms including Vichy showers and a hydro-therapy tub. Besides classes in spinning, squeeze, pilates, yoga fusion, top and bottom line fitness, the spa offers a bargain summer special of $99 (through August) for a 60-minute facial, body scrub or 90-minute manicure and pedicure.

Shopping - Aventura Mall
Outside the resort, activities abound. The Aventura Mall, ranked #2 most visited shopping center in U.S. by Travel & Leisure, features luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Dior, Emilio Pucci, Hugo Boss, Breitling, M Missoni, Herve Leger, Rolex, Gucci, Prada and Montblanc. For lunch or dinner enjoy fine American contemporary cuisine at The Grill on the Alley where Chef Chad Michael Lewark spins out tasty and substantial dishes like house cured gravlaks (salmon), mac & cheese loaded, aged prime steaks, roasted brick chicken, pan-seared Dover sole, and a very filling fruit cobbler. The California-based restaurant’s bar serves hand crafted martinis, cocktails, classic highballs, and mojitos.

Private Beach Club
Venture out to Turnberry Isle Miami’s private Beach Club in nearby Sunny Isles on the ocean for a morning of sandcastles, beach umbrellas, volleyball, kayaks, wave runners or paddleboards. For the sportsman the Kelley Fleet just south on Haulover Beach offers deep sea party boats on the Hurricane, Mucho K, and the Atlantis for half and full-day fishing in the blue waters of the Gulf Stream off Hollywood. As I brought in several gorgeous mutton snappers on the Atlantis I thought of Chef Gray back at the Cascata Grill and the herbs he might use from his garden for dinner that night.
