notch from all regions of Italy, with a focus on the Northern Whites and Reds. The maitre d' took very good care of us making sure Sofia was happy with all her selections. After sipping a soothing after dinner digestive liquor on the cozy couches in the hotel's lobby, we were ready for a good nights sleep.
If You Go
The best sights to see from Stresa are of course the Borromean Islands adorned with baroque palaces and overflowing gardens, and the sentinel castle above Angera. Flower enthusiasts must visit Verbania's Villa Taranto. More castles in Locarno, and the spectacular Bellinzona at the Swiss end of the lake. One of our most exciting days was the drive up to Monte Mottarone which rises half-way above Stresa and lake Orta. A 20 minute cable car journey can bring you up with captivating views as well. Once at the top, the mountain offers good biking trails, and walking opportunities. We opted to hike to the very top, and found a wonderful, if not mind boggling surprise. There on the side of the mountain stood an luge (bobsleigh) amusement ride that could only be seen to believed. Individual bobsleighs held passengers that controlled their own speed on a dangle of rails hovering above the mountainside. Our daughter begged to go on, so we said a prayer and joined the line not knowing what would be in store. Well...we survived the adventure...a bit shaken, adrenaline pumping as we now know will be one of the few magical moments in a lifetime!
For an romantic trip filled with beautiful towns, sights, and natural beauty...Lake Maggiore has it all...for couples and families who enjoy culture, adventure, and of course, amazing FOOD!
