J is the tenth letter of the alphabet, but when you walk into this hotel restaurant, it has clearly been elevated to number-one.
Upon entering this Zen oasis located on the Post Road and I-95, you are transported to a place that makes you feel as though you’re on vacation. The inviting lounge, with glass fireplace and plush couches, is enough to make you want to stay. There is also a patio complete with bar and flat screen tv’s as well as an outdoor pool and cabanas for the warmer months.
The J House Restaurant - Chic Bar
At 6PM the long, marble bar was filled with patrons. As I took a seat, I was greeted warmly by Alejandro who took my order for a glass of Vollereaux Champagne - $18, I let him know that I would be having dinner. Between taking sips of my sexy glass of bubbles and perusing the extensive menu options, I noticed that the lounge area was being set up for live music.
The J House Restaurant - Dinner Menu
The J House My dinner choices have been solidified or so I thought until I was told there is an amazing sushi menu as well. This just added an even better element to the evening. I started with the J House Roll: Salmon, Tuna and Cucumber wrapped in rice paper with an avocado seaweed salad - $15. There are 10 pieces, but they are bite sized so this made for a perfect appetizer. The roll sits on a sweet chili sauce and when combined with a touch of wasabi, it taunts every taste bud in your mouth and makes you crave more.
Next, I tried the Octopus Carpaccio with crispy Sunchoke, Mandarin Ginger vinaigrette on Microgreens - $16. Alejandro informed me that the octopus is so tender and perfect because the Chef drops a cork into the water while it is boiling. So interesting! My only suggestion for this dish would be to have less dressing on the Microgreens since the flavor of the Octopus with herbs and mandarin is so wonderful already.
The Wild Red Snapper with Ratatouille, Basil Puree and Balsamic reduction was my entree - $32. This rustic and wintery dish was just what I was looking for without being too heavy. I ordered a glass of Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc 2013 - $18 to compliment the fish. The vibrant colors of the vegetables and puree popped on my plate. The Snapper had been seared to produce an amazing crispy skin and as my fork went through the white flesh, I knew this would be cooked as it should be. The wine I chose complimented every bite as the live music started and the tables began to fill up, I knew this is place was something special.
The J House Pastry Chef's - Outstanding Offerings
Feeling so contently full and happy, I knew the pastry chef was outstanding, so, of course, I just had to try some of his magic. I ordered the House Sorbet - $8 that could rival any I have had in the world and the NY Style Cheesecake with berries - $9. Ok…. I am not a Cheesecake fan, but this has converted me. The dense yet light cake married with the berries and a drizzle of Raspberry Coulis was my ideal of a sweet/tart combination.
Top Shelf Happy Hour - Appetizers
For a “happy hour” cocktail 5:30pm - 7:00pm M-F, appetizers or dinner, the J House is a restaurant that is inviting, comfortable and elegant all at the same time. This truly is a destination spot. I will be returning often!
