The first few times you visit New York City, you might be tempted to stay in neighborhoods that are bustling with life. But after you’ve gotten to know the city a bit, you might be hit with the craving to become a local for a few days. One neighborhood I had never really gotten to know in New York City was the Upper East Side. Recently, I became a resident for a weekend by checking into the luxurious Lowell Hotel.
True Luxury
There are some hotels in New York City that are vast and impersonal – and yet they sometimes pass for luxury. For this special weekend in the Big Apple, I was checking into a special hotel on East 63rd between Park and Madison. Surrounded by boutiques, restaurants, and the expanse of Central Park, this trip would provide me with a perspective of the city I hadn’t experienced before.
Checking In
What the Lowell does best is understated luxury. There’s not too much fuss or too much glitz. At the front desk, we were welcomed and our bags were brought upstairs to the room. Walking to our room, I noticed that the rooms are numbered like apartments, a touch that makes the Lowell feel like home. Walking into the room, I was ready to move in. The large bathroom, plush bed, and writing desk were all features that are easily ignored in a New York City hotel room. Complimentary Wireless Internet is a much-appreciated touch for a journalist; if only all luxury hotels agreed with the Lowell that this is a basic and important service to provide guests.
A Retreat in the City that Never Sleeps
I was in my bathrobe when there was a knock at the door. A cheese plate and bottle of wine was left for us to enjoy as we settled into the evening. I’ve heard many visitors to New York City argue that you shouldn’t spend money on a hotel because you won’t spend much time there - but this experience shows exactly why that isn’t always true. After a day of pounding the pavement, exploring museums, and dealing with the traffic and honking horns, what could be better than a cozy suite, a big bath tub, and a cheese plate to kick off the night? When I left the hotel hours later for dinner reservations nearby, I was revived and ready to see what New York City had to offer after dark.
The Breakfast Test
Some hotels in New York City promise quiet and can’t deliver. In stark contrast, a night at the Lowell was just as quiet as a night spent in the countryside. The night was so restful, we almost slept straight through breakfast. However, the breakfast room at the Lowell is definitely worth waking up for. This elegant space will provide all the fuel you need for a day of exploring the Big Apple. Rooms are spacious enough to have breakfast delivered if you would rather eat in your bathrobe. Special Amenities A luxury hotel is really only as good as its amenities. One feature I loved about the Lowell was that all the rooms have a small kitchenette. If I wanted a cup of tea, it was only a couple minutes away. This service takes the idea of the mini bar to a whole new level. In a city like New York that can feel stressful at times, the presence of this kitchenette delivered a soothing quality to my stay. All of the rooms in the Lowell have their own décor, and some have balconies and fireplaces. During a summer visit, there would be no better place to sit with a glass of wine and that cheese plate I mentioned earlier than out on the balcony. For understated elegance on the Upper East Side, the Lowell will make your trip to New York City unforgettable.
