Let me tell you a story. It’s about a magical place that almost didn’t make it past its 252nd birthday. That’s saying something since it’s the only remaining historic building the British didn’t burn as they marched up Route 121 through Bedford, New York during the Revolutionary War. Fast-forward some 250 years to find a 10-foot chain link fence surrounding the once stately Dutch Colonial. It’s in terrible disrepair and close to being lost forever. It comes up for sale and developers are vying to knock it down to make way for yet another McMansion. Can you guess what happens next? The story has an interesting twist similar to Jimmy Stewart in "It’s a Wonderful Life". The property gets rescued by Richard Gere and becomes the five-star Relais & Châteaux Bedford Post Inn and Farmhouse Restaurant. This special place has become the center of the small town community. It’s a place to enjoy great food and wine and to celebrate life. Positive energy radiates through each hand-hewn beam. Slow down. Don’t motor by this storybook setting. Let’s check in and stay awhile.
Bedford Post Inn Just one hour north of New York City, Bedford Post Inn is situated amidst some of the most bucolic horse country on earth! Getting there is half the fun. Hidden from view, the renovated 1760s Dutch Colonial sits close to the road upon a granite knoll. As you pull into the driveway, continue up the hill and around the back of the inn to park. Best to leave your luggage in the car--the staff will collect it for you. Enjoy a short stroll down the bluestone path. On the way, check out the cool Zen reflecting pool and the outdoor living space complete with a wood-burning fireplace crackling a warm welcome every evening. It’s the perfect place to kick back and relax. The interior design at the Bedford Post Inn shines! The inn and it’s eight-rooms were lovingly created by Richard Gere’s wife Carey Lowell. You can tell that every design detail from the reclaimed antique oak floors to the Berber texture woven into the rugs and mosaic inlay on the bathroom floors were painstaking fretted over. The space is intimate. There are nooks and crannies to explore and to marvel at. Our favorites were the Lounge Bar, Wine Cellar, Chef’s Table, Farmhouse Patio and, of course, Room # 2 which we’re christening the 'Isabella Suite'.
My Room The bathroom is to die for. I’m sure Carey could be the head designer at Water Works if she so desired. The space is absolutely perfect. The entire bathroom is crafted in soothing shades of grey, cream and light blue marble. My favorite accoutrement was the double soaking antique claw-footed tub which was handmade and imported from Portugal. Enjoy a self-soothing soak or cuddle up in the bath with someone special. You’ll appreciate the REN amenity products, which, are inspired by the area’s natural botanicals. Pat yourself dry with white fluffy Frette towels. You’re officially spoiled now. Enjoy every minute of it! The inn has seven other unique rooms that are similarly decorated and furnished. Most of them offer terraces overlooking the woods and fireplaces. Prices range form $350.00 US to $650.00 US per night. In peak summer months, it's best to book your reservation up to 60 days in advance due to the boutique status of the inn.
