Downtown Miami’s emerging skyline is once again booming with cranes, new upscale glass-and-steel condos (+$5m), Bayside Marketplace and Marina, the Miami Heat’s American Airlines Arena, Ultra Music Festival Weekend (March), the new Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Arsht Center combining the Ziff Opera House and Knight Concert Hall, the world’s largest cruise nexus at the Port of Miami, and nearby attractions like Jungle Island on Watson Island mid-way on the MacArthur Causeway to South Beach.
b2 miami downtown
A convenient and relatively inexpensive way to bunk down on the main drag of Biscayne Boulevard is at the b2 miami downtown, a newly retrofitted (2013) full-service hotel with great views of the Port of Miami, the AA arena, Biscayne Bay, and even distant Miami Beach and the Atlantic ocean. The smallish but contemporary 243 rooms and suites provide hotel-wide FreeB Wi-Fi, B indulged spa suite, a B Active Fitness center, the Blissful Bed, Aveda toiletries, in-room dining (morning till night), and a 10,000 sq. ft. flexible function space. Says B Hotels & Resorts President & CEO Ayelet Weinstein: “The B brand is an innovative and dynamic lifestyle hospitality platform that is fun, adventurous, comfy, swanky, romantic, custom-tailored, authentic, and, most of all, approachable for each guest.”
Biscayne Tavern to Bayside
Adjacent to the lobby sits b2’s signature 80-seat, all-meal restaurant, Biscayne Tavern. The gastropub atmosphere combines sports bar TV screens with tasty hand crafted beers on tap (Goose Island, Floridian Hefewiezen) plus filling “grub” like roasted pork shank spaetzle, shrimp and grits, and old-fashioned chocolate chip cookies with milk. Just outside, across Biscayne Boulevard, Bayside Market, overlooking the Port of Miami, offers eateries, boutiques, water tours (from schooners to cigarette boats), and charter fishing. Try Captain Wayne Conn’s charter boat “The Legacy” or “Reward Won” for trips out Government Cut to the Gulfstream for sailfish, amberjack, grouper and mutton snapper. Capt. Wayne also provides party boat fishing with “Reward,” his largest vessel across the causeway at South Beach marina.
Art and Animals
A short walk from b2 miami downtown lies the Pérez Art Museum. The stunning Herzog & de Meuron design displays giant outside hanging foliage sculptures with terrific café views of the Port of Miami; inside, there’s everything from floating boats to Caribbean art, a Warhol “Brillo pad” box to a Dada almanach. Across the bridge on Watson Island, Miami’s next big development site, Jungle Island houses snow tigers, a super rare blue-mutated parrot, a 120-yr.-old turtle, kangaroos, and orangutans. Most impressive is their exclusive VIP tour (recent guests include Beyoncé and Jay-z, the Royal Saudi family) with super-informative guide Ryan who explains everything from lemur matriarchy to orangutan chemotherapy.
Miami Food
The food scene has really taken on steam in Miami. Around the corner from b2 miami downtown cvi.che 105 has cornered the market on Peruvian cuisine. Owner-host Juan Chipoco runs a smooth operation serving fresh corvina/shrimp/octopus ceviche, aji de gallina (chicken in yellow pepper cream), tacu tacu (bean & rice cake), and papa a la Huancaina (potatoes in spicy cheese sauce). Just across the Miami River at 485 Brickell Avenue, try 15th & Vine Kitchen and Bar at Viceroy Miami, a hotel-condo built by ubiquitous Miami developer and museum donator, Jorge Pérez. Situated on the 15th floor with a view towards the 300-foot pool and Biscayne Bay, the sophisticated restaurant serves small, tasty portions like Spanish pulpo salad, duck confit mac & cheese, and Korean short ribs with mango slaw.
