Nestled in the beautiful backcountry of Connecticut, Greenwich Polo Club was established in 1981 and is recognized as one of only four high-goal polo venues in the United States. Known for its unmatched roster of legendary teams, professional players, and champion equine athletes, fondly known as polo ponies. Distinguished families, young entrepreneurs, artists, and well-known personalities are all part of the international dynamic which makes Greenwich Polo Club so unique.
Polo has been played for thousands of years and the modern game is an exhilarating thrill ride bringing out the best of human and horse. Each match showcases eight players galloping on horseback across a 300-yard field at speeds of up to 35MPH.
The club is home to the legendary White Birch polo team, one of the most successful in history, having won the most high-goal polo tournaments of any team over the course of the past 25 years, including the US Open Polo Championship in 2005. Some of the world’s best players have played at Greenwich Polo Club, including Mariano Aguerre, Facundo Pieres, Hilario Ulloa, Nacho Figueras and many others. Each Spring these players descend on Greenwich with their strings of champion horses to compete for one of polo’s most prestigious cups, including the Perry Cup for this year’s East Coast Open.
Each Sunday match is attended by spectators flocking from New York City, Fairfield and Westchester counties and all parts in between, to witness the highest caliber of polo while enjoying an afternoon with friends and family. Greenwich Polo Club has also hosted many dignitaries and celebrities and in 2013 Prince Harry chose Greenwich Polo Club to host the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup. The prestigious match raised funds for the Sentebale charity founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in memory of their mothers to raise funds for Lesotho’s most vulnerable children.
This year, polo fans are in store for more than just an exhilarating season of high-goal polo when Greenwich Polo Club kicks off its first match on June 7th – the club has added a host of new food and beverage options sure to make each polo match an event to remember.
The J House Greenwich Polo After Party
Starting opening day on June 7th, J House Greenwich will be hosting a specialty craft cocktail bar at Greenwich Polo Club. The J House mixologists will be pouring refreshing, polo-inspired cocktails made with KEEL Vodka, a premium low calorie spirit from Newport, RI. Order "The Third Man" made with fresh grapefruit, lime, rosemary syrup and topped with bubbles – aptly named for the deciding umpire during a disagreement on the polo field - because tough decisions are best made with a KEEL cocktail in hand. Another recommendation is "The Throw-In" made with KEEL Vodka, elderflower, fresh lemonade and blueberry – inspired by the umpire starting or resuming play by throwing the polo ball. Relax and enjoy these two perfect cocktail companions for a bright, fun, polo-filled afternoon. The bar will also be serving beer and wine from sponsors Stella Artois and a full complement of Château D'Esclans Wispering Angel and champagne Château de Bligny NV Brut.
Whether fans choose to picnic on the sidelines or go the VIP route by purchasing grandstand tickets or private cabanas, there are plenty of food options to delight even the most discerning palettes. Each Sunday afternoon match, food trucks offering fresh local lobster rolls, farm to table wood fired brick oven pizza and freshly prepared gelato will be on site. You’ll want to arrive with an empty stomach to sample delicacies from Caffe Bon, Lobstercraft, Skinny Pines, Bounty, Follow That Cupcake, La Fenice Gelato and more.
In addition to hosting the specialty craft cocktail bar, J House will be the official after party destination for polo fans and players to unwind after the match. Located a short drive from the polo grounds at 1114 East Putnam Avenue in Greenwich, the after party will feature live music and DJ’s at J House’s outdoor pool. VIPs can purchase cabanas for preferred seating and access.
