fjord in the continental U.S. Before heading to town, stop along SR 3 at the intersection and stroll the free Asticou Azalea Garden, a colorful burst of azaleas and rhododendrons, from the North Carolina pink shell to the Japanese kiusuanum. Two of the oldest specimens in the garden are the weeping hemlock just north of the Main Bridge and the Alberta spruce near the North Bridge. Northeast Harbor is the wealthiest area on the island and even the lobster boats look chic next to yachts and million-dollar sailboats. Southwest Harbor beckons the discerning traveler as “the quiet side” off SR 198 and on SR 102 nestled off the lower end of Somes Sound with its unique fjord-like appearance anchored by the Cranberry islands in the Atlantic offshore. Here you will find boat building in a working harbor, stimulating shops like Flying Mountain Artisans (over 50 Maine artists), and the Gilley Museum with daily woodcarving workshops where your initial wooden kit will evolve into a colorful chickadee, goldfinch, Northern cardinal, loon or puffin. Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island are certainly heavy-hitters for any serious visitor contemplating an eventful trip to northeastern Maine.
