Skiing Lake Louise
The next morning, the bell captain, an affable man with a broad smile hailing from the Philippines, drove me to the ski area as he does all guests choosing to ski. With good fortune smiling, I enjoyed another breathtaking Bluebird day at Lake Louise. With 4200 skiable acres, 139 named trails, exhilarating Super steeps, and numerous off-piste adventures, the Lake Louise Ski area is special. For the price of a lift ticket ($83), you get vistas of the Bow Valley, the lake itself, and ten thousand foot peaks abound. The back bowls, which reminded me of Vail, were gigantic. Though traversing sideways, I skied both the Men’s and Women’s Downhill, trails designed for the World Cup event held there every fall. By early afternoon with plenty of skiing behind me, I stopped on a trail a few hundred feet above the lodge to call the hotel and arrange pick up which arrived promptly a few minutes after I finished my last run.
Dining at The Post Hotel & Spa
Dinner that night at the main restaurant located diagonally across from the lobby and adjacent to a small, intimate, and cozy bar room, was fantastic. I chose a $105 six course gourmet tasting menu of the day enjoying roasted Quebec squab breast, milk fed veal tenderloin with Atlantic lobster, and an amaretto parfait glace to name several.
Both the Post Hotel and Lake Louise Ski area are outstanding destinations. The only caveat being that they are a solid two to two and half-hour drive from Calgary airport and transportation might require one to leave quite early for international flights. Also, flying from the east coast is a long day of travel door to door so a direct flight is highly recommended.
