corner, a small coffee table with two cushioned chairs, was set below a triple window oval turret giving a clear third floor view of the highly active street below. The bathroom was modern, decent, and conventional. Nightly room rates vary from $99 to $159 depending on the day of the week and the view. Great Location
The location of The Colonial Inn was superb, close to town and only a few walking blocks from the ocean. Beach access in Ogunquit is rather unique. A causeway takes people and cars over a small bridge onto a long thin barrier strip of sand, beach, and Atlantic surf.
Unfortunately, the weather turned nasty the first afternoon and stayed crummy until I left two days later.
Plenty of Restaurants and Small Shops
Breakfast at The Colonial Inn, continental roadside style, was on the light side so I tried various establishments just down the road. With plenty of restaurants and small shops, I ate often but nothing that I sampled rocked my world. Banditos Mexican Grill on Shore Road had a friendly, casual atmosphere with outside tables. I also enjoyed Backyard, one of the local coffee shops within walking distance. For dinner, I tried the Italian restaurant, Cafe Prego, but the Haddock over linguine was disappointingly bland and yet the elevated patio still created a nice ambiance. I found the salad and scallop lunch entrée on the outside patio at Frills to be decent.
Put It On Your Short List
For a couple wanting peace, serenity, and natural beauty, The Inn at Ocean’s Edge is hard to beat. For activity, affordability, and a magnificent ocean beach, The Colonial Inn is a decent choice.
