Deer Valley Resort - Voted Best Ski Resort in North America
If you’re looking to embark on a skiing holiday with the family or just setting off on an adventure to ski with friends then consider the Deer Valley Resort. It has a lot to offer. Getting there is easy. It’s located in the Wasatch Mountain range in the Big Cottonwood Canyon 36 miles east of Salt Lake City International Airport.
Convenient Location
We like the convenient proximately to the international airport due to the fact that other popular Western ski towns like Vail and Aspen can be challenging to fly into due to inclement weather. More than likely this scenario will not affect you flying in Salt Lake City due to the flat terrain and the great salt lake that's situated nearby.
Luxury Service
Everything about the Deer Valley Resort is luxurious and customer service is paramount to the corporate culture here. They operate nine luxury lodges and a signature collection of luxury private homes and condominiums. (Read the Sliver Baron Lodge review) Be sure to take advantage of the ski valet service. They’ll help you unload your car and put your skis in the rack too. Please also don’t forget about the complimentary ski storage service at the end of the day. It’s available at the base of the Snow Peak Lodge and is convenient for those who do not want to schlep their equipment into town or back to their room.
Best Ski Resort in North America
Deer Valley Resort was voted five years in a row as the best ski resort in North America by SKI Magazine. This place is big. It has six mountains and terrain for everyone from the beginner to the expert. In the grooming department Deer Valley ranks on the top of the list too. If you like skiing powder we’d recommend having a shaped skis for the ‘corduroy’ groomed runs and wider powder skis for the feshies.
Kids Love The Deer Valley Resort Too
There’s plenty of beginner terrain for the kiddies at Deer Valley Resort. You can enroll them in a world-class ski school where they’ll have a one-on-one experience with an instructor. We watched some of the kids zooming down the hill having a blast in a conga line formation. They were having so much fun on their downhill adventure that the cold was no concern to these little ones. Mom and dad will love that. They can explore all six mountains knowing that their kids are safe and having a good time.
Ski The Deer Valley Resort
At first glance Deer Valley plays with your visual perceptions of space. When we first caught a glimpse of the mountain from the Snow Peak Lodge it looked smaller than you’d expect. This perception vanishes as you exit the Carpenter Express lift. You’re now at 8,100’ and are able to see the enormous panoramic vista of all six mountains. Spectacular.
Follow The Sun
It’s fun to be a newbie and explore. We’d suggest following the sun if you’re an early morning raiser. Begin your day by taking some runs on Bald Mt. and work your way over to Flagstaff. Take a pit stop at the Silver Lake Lodge and check out the comfort food at the Royal café before heading all the way over to our favorite area Empire Canyon.
Empire Canyon – Montage Hotel
You’ll want to access the summit from the ‘Empire Express’ lift. You’ll be able to see forever on a clear day at 9,570’. Traverse over to the ‘Daly Bowl’ for some exhilarating wide-open terrain. If you find yourself at the bottom of the Lady Morgan Express check out the new luxury hotel Montage and the Vista Lounge and Terrace restaurant.
Ski Hidden Jewels
At the end of the day we discovered a jewel of run called ‘Square Deal’. It’s often overlooked because it’s relatively short and accessed best by riding the Red Cloud lift. It was so much fun to carve some ‘S’ turns in the powder with my friend and look back up the fall line from down below at our run. If trees are your things then head over to the nearby woods in the Ontario Bowl where you can weave in and out to your hearts content. This was a blast and takes some skill and technique. Not for beginners or intermediates. Please.
Riding the Chair With a Celebrity
You never know whom you’ll meet at the Deer Valley Resort. On our first run of the day we shared a chair ride with Phil Mahre. He was on the 1984 U.S. Ski Team and won the Gold Medal in Slalom. When asked how the conditions were, he replied jokingly. “I’d ask for your money back.” We all had a good belly laugh. It was snowing like a banshee and the conditions were stellar. Phil and his brother Steve run a training center at Deer Valley. You can contact them at 888-SKI-TIPS or on the Internet at www. http://mahretrainingcenter.com
