Hope is Alive and Well in Newtown, CT
Walking amongst the makeshift memorials in Newtown, CT was a powerful experience. There is still so much love and hope in the world. Many might not think so right now. They’ll ask why would an all-loving, all knowing God allow people to experience pain and suffering?
C.S. Lewis answers this difficult question in his book ‘The Problem of Pain’. God's omnipotence gives man free will and there are consequences to this gift. Bad things happen to good people. Evil exists.
However, God didn’t intend for us to be cavalier, pernicious and downright arrogant when it comes to our personal safety and protecting children from harms way.
Gun enthusiasts’ continue to proffer arguments that dance around the issue of gun control. The logger jam of sensible solutions has been at a standstill for generations. Are we at a tipping point? There may not be a better time for change than right now.
If you will not soften your stance on gun control for me then acquiesce for little Emilie and her nineteen first grade classmates and the teachers that tried in vain to protect them.
Do we need assault weapons, high capacity clips and magazines on the streets of our towns? The answer is a resounding no! These guns are designed to be effective killing machines on the battlefield. Let’s enact legislation that regulates them to this theater.
These precious little first graders and their protectors have raised the bar for all of us to do better. Hope lives on in their memories. It’s time for us all to step up and support our President and legislators in their efforts to do something about this situation. After all, God wants us to take responsibility and make good choices. These tragedies don’t have to continue. It’s up to all of us to make it so.
