Joey C's Roadhouse: Cleaning Up Comfort Food
We all know that BBQ ribs will never equal kale in the health department, but Ania and Joe Catalano from Joey C's Roadhouse in Milford are on a mission to use the cleanest, healthiest ingredients in their cooking to create quality dishes they are proud to serve to their customers.
With a varied menu that specializes in house smoked dry-rubbed BBQ, and fresh Tex-Mex, there is something for every palate...including vegans and those on gluten-free diets. No refined sugars, or corn syrups are ever used in recipes. Their signature dry rub has no sugar in it at all, unlike most traditional BBQ, and the sauces are sweetened with only a little organic agave nectar, and a touch of molasses.
The latest breaking news is the Catalanos are switching to Himalayan sea salt in all their cooking and throwing the refined salt in the trash! Ania Catalano, cookbook author, and former owner of Sprouts Natural Foods Markets in Trumbull and Fairfield, has been a wholefoods chef for over 20 years and a huge advocate for using mineral-rich sea salts in cooking for their abundant health benefits.
It's her collaberation with classically trained husband, Joey C, that results in menu items not typically found in BBQ joints such as... lowfat turkey chili (made with in house ground turkey breast), fish tacos, huge salads, mexican black beans, brown rice and garlicky collard greens. But for the die hard BBQ lovers...they don't disappoint. The ribs, pulled pork, and beef brisket all have a lightly smokey, but clean flavor that lets the quality of the product shine through. Joe Catalano is a master working with all cuts of meat, including the popular BBQ braised lamb shank, and slow cooked Osso Bucco he runs as specials.
Joey C's is also known for their great burgers using certified Humane, hormone-free ground beef. The latest addition is a locally sourced grass-fed beef burger, an alternative for the health conscious.
The bar follows suit, using only fresh squeezed juices in their signature margaritas and cocktails. Fifteen beers on tap feature local and European craft brews, with free tastings on Thursday nights
Joe and Ania joined forces to create a place in their own hometown that has all the qualities they look for in a restaurant themselves...a cozy, fun atmosphere, and clean comfort food done right! For more information visit www.joeycbbq.com.
